OSI news: Gavin Harrison tracks drums
Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 11:44AM Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree has just laid down drum tracks on a handful of new OSI songs. Jim and I continue to write and record material for the fourth OSI album, our first with Metal Blade Records. Mixing is slated for June 2011.
New Shine CD web page
Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 10:36PM The Shine CD is now available for order, and I've set up this website to showcase the album. The journal entries below are copied from the blog on the Shine project's Kickstarter page. Kickstarter was used to raise money for the CD release by taking pre-orders from supporters.
Here is the link to the Shine page you can send to anyone you think might be intersted in the album.
Proofs / Shipping Date Estimate
Friday, December 3, 2010 at 9:54PM The final color proofs arrived last week. It took a couple of tries to get all the colors right, but now everything is looking good. The photo below doesn't do them justice, but I thought you might find it interesting to see the process.
The manufacturer has given me a December 14 completion date, so I'm hoping to start mailing them out to you the following Monday, December 20.

Final Artwork Preview
Friday, November 5, 2010 at 9:52PM Over the past few weeks I've been working with a talented graphic designer named Alessandro Falca of Conte di San Pietro. He has done an amazing job taking the classic Penguin Books style, coming up with an original illustration based on the Shine video, and adapting it to a 6-panel digipack.
Here are some comments on the design from Alessandro:
"Realizing the artwork for a movie soundtrack is about finding the right mood of the music featured in it, not necessarily in a one-way road to the imagery of the film. Küçük Kıyamet is an excellent specimen of cinema, both visually and conceptually, with a brilliant soundtrack; the challenge has been creating something with its own heartbeat, with several interpretations on different levels."
Alessandro is currently working on the poster and T-shirt design. The digipack is now finalized and will go to the manufacturer next week. I am hoping to ship preorders late this month or in early December.
More updates to come!

Advance CD-R's
Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 9:49PM The first batch of the advance CD-R's went out yesterday, and the rest will go out on Monday!

Success!
Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 9:48PM Thanks to everyone who pledged for making the Shine funding a success! I never expected the Shine project to receive such overwhelming support.
This has proven to be a great way to work independently, since you can gauge interest in a project before spending thousands of dollars producing it. Those who have the resources to make larger pledges are a big part of what makes this fundraising method work, so a special thank you to everyone who contributed $100 and over. (Your advance CD-R's are arriving from the manufacturer on Monday, and they will go out next week.)
I'll be collecting addresses and T-shirt sizes from everyone soon, and I'll continue to post updates about the project on the Kickstarter page right up until the release in November. I have more projects in mind so please sign up to the mailing list if you'd like to be notified about them.
Thanks again to everyone for your support!
CD design ideas
Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 9:31PM Well it's getting pretty close to the funding date, and thanks to you guys we've now officially tripled the original goal! Amazing.
As we get closer to manufacturing the Shine CD I wanted to post some artwork ideas, and later perhaps some proofs. One idea I have is creating packaging in the style of early Penguin book covers, like the ones below. I like the immediacy of using only two or three colors and a rudimentary figure.
Perhaps the image on the cover could be a boy in a sailboat (like in the video), in blue, black and white, for example. Right now blue feels like the right color for Shine. If you want to see some more Penguin book examples, someone has collected a whole bunch of them here.

Bonus Track #2: "KK Trailer" mp3
Friday, September 17, 2010 at 9:25PM This is the original audio for the film trailer I posted last week (the longer video). The first part is the beginning of the track "Window Theme," which opens the album. The second part (beginning around 0:52) can be heard in the film, but not the album. As I mentioned earlier, the ending music (beginning 1:27) was written specifically for this trailer.
Kucuk Kiyamet Trailer
Bonus Track #1: "KK Teaser" mp3
Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 9:16PM As promised last week, here is the audio to the Küçük Kıyamet TV spot video I posted last week. It's a short track (0:55). I also recovered the audio for the trailer (2:30), and will be posting that one next.

Video: Theater Trailer
Monday, September 13, 2010 at 9:11PM Here is another trailer for the film; this one was for theaters. The music is not exactly representative of the soundtrack album, but it does incorporate a couple of the themes early on. The last third is hyped and over-the-top by request of the production studio, and I only used it in the trailer. Brought to you in stunning mono! (Again, found this online.)
Here is some more info about the film:

I should have the original audio for this and the previous trailer posted this week!
Video: Küçük Kıyamet TV spot
Friday, September 10, 2010 at 9:00PM Amazingly, we have almost doubled the original funding goal! I am getting way more $100 pledges for the pre-release CD-R and liner credits than I expected, and I'm really grateful for that. I hope my CD burner is up to it!
Here is a short trailer for the film, Küçük Kıyamet, which I believe they used as a TV ad. The motif I used also occurs in the film, but this recording was made specifically for this trailer and it doesn't appear in the actual film or the soundtrack. The sound quality of the video file is not so great (I found this online.) But right now I'm trying to recover the original audio recording so I can post it as a short bonus track!
More to come....
Download: "Korkma" mp3
Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 9:00PM Here is another track from the album, by way of saying thanks for reaching the goal! This one is called Korkma, which means "Don't be afraid". Don't say it to people who were not afraid in the first place, because you will scare them.

"Shine": soundtrack to a Turkish film
Monday, September 6, 2010 at 5:44PM From Kickstarter project page:
A few years ago while living in Istanbul, I wrote and recorded a soundtrack for a film called Kucuk Kiyamet (“Little Apocalypse“), a kind of supernatural, post-traumatic drama centered on Turkey's recent earthquakes. The film was nominated for some Turkish Film Critics Association (SİYAD) awards, including one for the soundtrack. However, the soundtrack CD was never released in Turkey as planned, so I would like to self-release it.
The name of the soundtrack is Shine, and it is already recorded, mixed and mastered. I've started this Kickstarter project to fund the design and manufacture of the physical CD. The funding deadline is October 8, 2010, and no one will be charged for their pledges unless the funding goal is reached by that date. I plan to release the album in November.
The backer rewards include a copy of the CD before the release date, posters, T-shirts, a full digital download of the album, and your name in the liner notes. You'll be able to download bonus tracks and selected album tracks ("Shine" and "Korkma") immediately after you pledge - just click on the Blog tab above after pledging. All backers can access "exclusive updates" on the Blog page, where I will post some more bonus tracks, video, album artwork concepts, and artwork proofs leading up to the release.
